Chromar TechnologySpecialist optical systems

Specialist optical systems, designed and built in South Africa

Chromar designs, assembles and tests lenses for satellites, aircraft and long-range imaging, backed by 45 years of optical design and more than 260 original designs.

Light path through a catadioptric lens: parallel rays pass a corrector plate, reflect off a concave primary mirror and a small secondary mirror, and come to focus behind the primary. corrector secondary primary mirror focus
A catadioptric lens folds the light path with two mirrors, so a long focal length fits in a short barrel. The same principle runs from the C250 to the 2,500 mm Kuiper lenses.

Flown and fielded

Proof from orbit, the air and the ground.

Where our lenses work

Chromar optics serve space, high-altitude platforms (HAPS) and UAVs, airborne and naval systems, military vehicles and artillery, security and long-range surveillance, mining, industry, medicine and forestry, as well as commercial and enthusiast users.

Multi-spectral designs cover UV, visible, NIR, SWIR and MWIR. Most are diffraction limited, or close to it, over the field and spectral range they are designed for; they are athermalised, built to handle shock and impact, and kept compact and light.

How a project runs

Satellite in Earth orbit

Design, develop, assemble, qualify, test

Every stage under one roof, or any one stage on its own.

  1. Design

System analysis and specification, then the lens: configuration, prescription, thermal and tolerance analysis.

  2. Develop

Mechanical design for alignment, athermal behaviour and stray-light control, and new concept development.

  3. Assemble

Assembly and alignment in laminar-flow cabinets for a dust-free environment.

  4. Qualify

Environmental and space qualification campaigns, run with specialist test partners.

  5. Test

Every lens is MTF-tested on our own equipment and shipped with its measured curve.

45 years of optical design

From missile seeker optics and tank sights to helmet tracking for fighter aircraft and cameras in orbit. Our heritage

  1. Tymen Nagel (Snr) begins optical design.

  2. Chromar is founded.

  3. Sumbandila satellite launches with a Chromar-designed main camera.

  4. Tymen Ryk Nagel (Jnr) takes ownership of Chromar.

  5. Two C250 f/4 lenses launch on SpaceX Transporter-14.

  6. More than 260 original designs. Kuiper series in development.
